I'm Just In The Mood Tonight - Jay Wilbur And His Orchestra - Dominion A 179
This was a really nice discovery - I love the stripped back arrangement featuring the vocal chorus and guitar at the start, then some really nice arranged ensemble passages.

Definitely one of the rarer Savoy Hotel Orpheans sides, this song was jointly written by Carroll Gibbons and James Dyrenforth for the 1934 comedy film of the same name. I recently took a short trip to Europe, and came back with a few records from Prague and Budapest which I plan to share over the next few weeks. This was definitely my favourite buy - a song dedicated to the beautiful city of Budapest! My video is accompanied by a few snaps I took while I was there. The lyrics via Google Translate are: Budapest, Budapest, you are wonderful! You are my heartbeat...

This was the only disc that this group made. In 1945, they came second in the Melody Maker All-Britain Amateur Dance Band Championships. It was also the only recording of this song written by the bandleader himself, and arranged by the group's trumpet player - who also has a lovely solo. I am grateful to Terry Brown for the bio below: South Wales born Jack Evans the saxophonist formed the Cardi...
What a honey this is! Never heard of Tom Barratt, but he and Bert(?) Thomas put in a really beguiling performance together, and the ensemble work is sparkling.
Wonderful original recording quality, allowed to shine here, rather than muddied with filters. Great to hear this rare record-and the band sounds so tight and slick.
Thank you!
A really pleasurable listen with an unusually innovative arrangement. The sax work both solo and in section is also exceptional. Different from the run of the mill, and all the better for it.
Vocal refrain first. Works very well with this great foxtrot tune.
I agree!
It's unusual for the time isn't it? Very nice.
I'm very confused. The Dominions issue with Len Fillis "Happy Days Are Here Again" was also released with Norman Sissel's version. And This worldecho issue used Len Fillis' version of S'posin' as well as Norman Sissel's under the same catalogue number!?
Yeah!
Tiny Winters on vocals, believe it or not, the vocalist is a male!
Very, very difficult to find - a nice up-beat treat from the Gibbons/Dyrenforth song team, with a lovely piano opening from Carroll, and some superb closing section work. First class!
Fabulous record, and the photographs are sublime!
"The Savoyard Aristocrat"
This is wonderful - I would love to attend such a concert - imagine what Mr. Fred Elizalde and Mr. Al Bowlly would feel knowing this number was still 'Jumping' almost one hundred years after they recorded it
Do you know if Al Bowlly ever recorded this song?
Interesting question - he did sing it on stage - it is said he even broadcast it on the radio - it was one of his go-to numbers and yet there is no record of him recording the number - perhaps a radio transcript survives - sadly I feel this is wishful thinking on my part - however he did record Stardust and it remains missing - so you never know - and what did he record on the B-Side of Stardust?
@@anthonyfrew1571 no B-side. I believe it was only recorded single sided as a test with Don Barrigo. I've been trying to reach the EMI-archives, as they're the most likely to hold this item.. but they are currently busy moving the collection. And won't be complete till 2025 or 2026.
@@alternateunreleasedshellac505 Thank you for your reply and good luck with the EMI-Archives
@@anthonyfrew1571 I also hope that I may find the Afrikaans HMV recordings as well there.
Happy little tune - I like that (especially when you consider in which times this was recorded)!
Very nice - still prefer Al Bowlly's more jazzy version - enjoyable just the same
Thank you for this great performance and the great music! Your countrymen always produce excellent musicians and jazz bands!
Wonderful! Many thanks for sharing!
Fabulous!
Brilliant with a stunning Lew Stone arrangement - Hylton at his very best.
Nice French pressing, I love this song!!
Lovely Noble/Bowlly arrangement! Rest In Peace, Al Bowlly 🕊
Where’s the rest of the band??
This was a condensed unit so just the six of them for this concert :)
The OPSO has been a bit ad hoc for years. Its glory days were with Ondrej Havelka in the early 1990s when it was a full-sized dance band. The full size band (or at least, its lavish budget) seemed to defect with Havelka to form the Melody Makers.
They are the ancestors of the 1920s revival movement in the early 1980s (Havelka, Bartos etc). When I was in Prague in the 1990s, I bought one of their CDs. Glorious!
Now people will assume it’s just AI
One of Coward's great classics - very well done with a lovely vocal from Ms Petrie.
This is the best thing I’ve heard
Great upload! Thanks from Hungary!
Thank you!
Two delightful compositions by Strachey - an enormous talent. Especially enjoyed the drama of the second dance piece.
Lovely.
Thanks, been waiting for this! Opening bars sound like holiday for strings
Unissued - may be very rare - perhaps the only recording of Anona singing this number - I can not understand why it remained unissued - but happily not lost - please keep an eye open for the lost recording of Stardust as sung by Al Bowlly
Pure genius.
Muy bonito el tema musical gatuno😅.Mi gato favorito de anime clásico 🐈⬛🐾😸😹😻❤❤❤❤❤❤👍🥰
One of my fave Sam Browne and Ambrose recordings. It's on a double LP I have. Love it!
Another great Nat Star tune!
I'm aware of Rudy Vallee's jazz tinged and pacey version of the number, but this is also rather enjoyable. Played in a somewhat Yale Blues rhythm, and although a bit dated in the arrangement, there's a really tasty trumpet playing behind the vocal and elsewhere, and splendid section work. Good fun.
1:40 Why does the bull seem to be missing one leg?
Great!!!!!❤
Fascinating to hear such an early, non-swingy version.
❤❤❤ My favourite song from the beloved #BratislavaHotSerenaders!
What a bonus, as I have only ever heard “Serenade” before. What a great talent he was.
…with MY microphone 😊😉
It was generous of you to let him borrow it for the performance
@@JonathanHolmesjazz I’m such a kind person …☺️
Lovely ❤
Not completely unknown, but until now unheard and never mentioned, although I included it in the discography I wrote for my Foresythe biography, published in 'The Discographer Magazine', some years ago - he recorded another of his celebrated compositions, 'Serenade for a Wealthy Widow', on two matrices, GB5846 -1-2 on the same day, which also went unissued. His talents are on full display on this side, which I'm grateful to you for publishing for the first time.
Thank you, Jonathan for coming to our performance and sharing your moving picture. I hope that we will meet again soon!
Me too! I really enjoyed the experience
What a fabulous ensemble. They absolutely nail the violin / winds / brass colors, and play with such evident pleasure.
Very "democratic"...
I have this particular song stuck in my mind. I've grown to like Maurice Elwin.
Lord! It's IS almost identical to the Brunswick.. Fantastic.
Amazing tempo, with consistency and rhythmic volume, from days gone buy, but NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN… thank you for sharing
Wow 😮😮😮😍😍🥰😍
